"Pelléas et Mélisande" is Claude Debussy’s only completed opera, written between 1893 and 1902 and based on Maurice Maeterlinck’s Symbolist play of the same name. It premiered on April 30, 1902, in Paris. It is a masterpiece of musical Impressionism, setting the playwright’s text almost unchanged to sophisticated and atmospheric music.
Prince Golaud finds the mysterious Mélisande in the forest, marries her, and brings her to the castle. Mélisande falls in love with Golaud’s younger brother, Pelléas, arousing Golaud’s jealousy and setting in motion a tragic chain of events.
This one-hour, fully staged version of the opera is performed in French and features sets and costumes. The principal roles are performed by soloists of Jerusalem Lyric Opera accompanied by an orchestra.
